I recently posted a detailed guide to the search engine optimization implications that one needs to consider when launching or optimizing a blog. The post got quite a bit of attention on SEOChat, and the Administrator, Terri Wells, asked to re-purpose the post and create a featured article on SEOChat’s main page. Terri’s version came out great. Check it out: Blogging and SEO, a Beginner`s Guide

If you don’t feel like really diving into it, here is a quick recap of the takeaways of the article:

Having a blog doesn’t help your rankings, but it can be used to post great content, attract backlinks, and build a community.

Host your blog on your domain, not with Blogspot or a similar blog host.

Your blog should be in a folder off your main domain, not a subdomain.

Use any blog software you want (mostly). I prefer Wordpress.

Things you should be concerned with when it comes to on-site optimization of your blog: URL structure, canonicalization issues, META tags, Title tags, Alt tags, breadcrumb navigation, headers, sitemaps, pagination, best articles should be “pages” not “posts”, social media links, etc.

Promote your blog – always focus on conversion, promote comments, build a community, get involved with other bloggers, and most importantly, practice intelligent linkbuilding, the right way

Next time I write any sort of substantial SEO article, I’ll post it here first.
